How Is Child Support Calculated In Minnesota?
Child support in Minnesota is set by statute and calculated based upon the number of children, the gross (pre-tax) income of each parent, and the number of overnights the children spend with each parent during the year. The state operates in online calculator that allows you to see the presumptive amount in your case.
The court does have the authority to deviate upwards or downwards from the presumptive amount when setting child support, but needs to find that it is in the best interests of the children to do so. In most cases, the court does not deviate.
